Day 5 - Nature Walks, Caving and the Beach
Hello Everyone! It’s Caroline and I’ll be writing the blog post today.
The first thing we did today was drive to MacMillan park to see some pretty big trees. After a totally legal crossing of the road, we walked a short loop where we got to examine the very big, very old Douglas Fir trees. We also took a short stop at a nearby stream and climbed some trees (well I didn’t, but i found a very nice tree to sit on).
After walking along that trail a little longer, we stopped at the largest Douglas Fir in the park — it was so tall that we couldn’t even see the top. It is also taller the the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
We then finished that walk and did the other trail on the other side of the very safe road. There we saw more trees and shrubbery and also stopped at the small stream. I swear every time we find water it’s like a necessity to stop for at least a little while.
After dinner, we went back to the hotel to grab our beach stuff before walking to the nearby beach. This beach was jam-packed with action though; hosting a country music concert, professional sand castle making competition as well as the opportunity to swim in the Pacific Ocean.
Many of us chose our own paths, though I really enjoyed seeing all the amazing creations that were just made our of sand, as well as dancing to “Fishin in the Dark” before taking a quick dip the in Pacific.

We then piled back into the van and drove to see the Petroglyphs at Sproat Lake. If your like me and imagine Egypt when you hear petroglyph, your going to be a bit disappointed. While the petroglyphs were very cool, they weren’t quite what I was expecting. It was still really interesting to see a piece of Canadian history that truly is ancient.
After our short walk back to the van, we headed to Horne Lake Caves. This was personally the highlight of my day. We arrived at the information building and began our walk up a hill towards the Riverbend Cave. Once we reached the mouth of the cave, we all put on our sweaters as the caves remain at 8 degrees Celsius all year round.
We traversed down into the cave, learning about the different typed of rock, crystal structures and how dark it really can be when there is no surface light. We even got to experience what it was like in complete darkness and learned that when you strike quartz together, it creates a small light emission you can only see in absolute darkness.
We then got a picture before heading back out of the cave where our group split. Some of us went down the hill, myself included, while the rest of the group went to the Main Cave. From all of their pictures I am slightly jealous I didn’t tag along, but I’m not a fan of a tight squeeze! They climbed up 3 waterfalls, used many ladders to climb up and down, went on Canada's only cave slide and went through a tight squeeze called the cheese grater.
The other group came down the hill and we all made a short stop at the gift shop (our favourite place) before jumping back in the van on the way to Lefty’s for dinner.

We then did the usual end of day things; shower, lunches, blog comments (thank you all for posting! its so awesome to hear for everyone!!) and then writing the night’s blog.
Thanks for reading! All the love,
Caroline

I’m glad Crystal and Tara planned such great adventures for you to do. They sure jam packed your days. They’re making sure you get to see as much as possible. It’ll be a trip to remember.
ReplyDeleteThe caving (spelunking?) sounds really exciting! What a great day!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the update, Caroline! It sounds like there might be a story behind the “very safe road!” All of today’s adventures sound amazing again. The caving, the trees and the water…can you imagine the size of tree cookies I could get from those trees?! Canoeist to read about today’s adventures! ❤️ Auntie J
ReplyDeleteGood morning! I was so happy to see a new post when I woke up this morning! Caroline, your accounts of the day made me laugh as I could hear your unique voice a number of times. Those Douglas Fir trees were certainly massive! I'm sorry the petroglyphs were not quite what you expected, although they looked cool to me. Your cave tour looked amazing; I'm so glad that you were able to visit them and complete the tour that each of you felt most comfortable with. I'm always in awe of a good sand castle and the ones you saw in Parksville looked very intricate. I'm happy to hear you were able to swim in the Pacific Ocean. Safe travels for the rest of your adventures. Lots of Love, Mum
ReplyDeleteDear Caroline - thank you for your blog and the description of the day. I appreciate seeing all the photos of the gang, and I liked the tree section in particular. I hope you are having a nice time and that you enjoy your time in BC! We miss you, love Dad
ReplyDeleteSounds like a fun day. I see Ashiya is dancing. I need to frame that picture. 🙂 love you
ReplyDeleteThe spelunking looked amazing!!! I would have loved to have seen the light coming from the quartz. How cool!!
ReplyDeleteThe sandcastle competition would have been great too. I’m always in awe of people’s creativity and skill for such things.
Celeste, I am so excited that you are having an incredible adventure. Absorb everything❤️❤️
What an adventure! So much to take in in one day - from tall trees to deep caves. The beach events sound like they were a happy surprise to find! Great memories!
ReplyDeleteAnother jam packed day. Mostly I’m happy to know everyone survived crossing the very safe road, which I’m assuming was not safe at all! I also noticed in the pictures Madeline and Claire either dancing or having a ‘who stays on’ contest on a not so wide tree. That looked like fun, ie scary! I can understand why some chose not to do the cheese grater part of the caving tour,
ReplyDeleteJust the sound of it would be bad if one didnt like tight spaces. The caving pictures were great and I loved all the descriptions,
Thanks Caroline! Dancing and the sand castle contest looked like a lot of fun as
did swimming! Claire-Leah and I just got home from Vancouver but nearly as packed an agenda as all of you. Stay safe everyone, especially on any more very safe roads.
Aren’t bats afraid of Ungoys? Glad to hear you are having fun. Lorelei and Toby miss you (even though nobody likes Toby). Miss you and can’t wait till you get back to work.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the detailed updates. I love hearing about your trip! The caves sound amazing but a little scary.
ReplyDeleteHeyo guys! I miss you and can’t believe I’ve missed such an amazing trip! Can’t wait to see you guys when you get back! You all look like you’re having so much fun! Celeste and Maddy, I love your guy’s hair they both look so cool! Care look at you with your tan going on. Can’t wait to hear about the trip next time you can get on a call! Kiera, nice selfie. Found many mirrors? Ashiya and Sydney, you both have such big smiles in the pictures! Claire and Elizabeth both of you look like you are having so much fun! Hope you all don’t annoy the leaders too much and make them (almost) leave you in BC like they (almost) did with us in Europe! Much love to all ❤️
ReplyDeleteAlexis ❤️
Of all the time I have spent on the Island, I never knew about the caves. Super photos.
ReplyDeleteHi Syd, its Mom-Im sorry I didn't get a chance to post yesterday Zach and I were at the Elks game working the concession.
